He was the son of Sir William Leveson-Gower, 4th Baronet and his wife Jane Granville.〔(Record for ''John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower'' at ''www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk'' )〕 He was born on 7 January 1675 in Sittenham, Yorkshire.
